A 54-year-old man was freed from kidnappers in the state’s Okpe Local Government Area by Delta State Police Command operations, who also found ammunition.

In a statement released on Monday, December 18, 2023, the command’s spokeswoman, DSP Bright Edafe, stated that the victim had been saved during a stop and search along the Okuwutaiire community.

The victim was abandoned by the kidnappers, who were driving a Toyota Camry, as they leaped out of the car and ran into a nearby bush, according to the PPRO.

“The statement states that the crime intelligence operations carried out during the Ember months period continue to yield positive results. On December 17, 2023, the command’s operatives successfully prevented an attempted kidnapping and recovered two AK-47 rifles.”

“The Command received reliable information about a group of suspected kidnappers in the Okpe LGA on the aforementioned date at 2130 hours. Based on this information, Commander Safer Highway CSP Joseph Onubi was instructed by CP Wale Abass, the Commissioner of Police Delta State Police Command, to mobilize the men stationed along the Sapele axis.

When the Safer Highway Patrol team spotted a Toyota Camry 2.4 (REG. NO:GGE 645 FM) that fit the informant’s description and was traveling in their direction, they launched an extensive stop and search along Okwutaiire Community Okpe LGA, Delta State.

“The driver quickly maneuvered and zoomed off after spotting the police. The driver and another passenger were forced to jump out of the moving car and run into a nearby building as the police pursued them.

“During the vehicle search, two (02) AK47 rifles with thirteen (13) rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition were found hidden in the car’s trunk and engine compartment. An attempt is being made to apprehend the gang members who are on the run, and exhibits are being held while the investigation gets underway.

“CP Wale Abass has reaffirmed that every effort is being made by the Command to guarantee that residents feel safe both during and after the holiday season.
